How Martial Arts-Taekwondo could help Children’s Mental wellbeing?

In our life, we have often been faced stress, anxiety, anger, frustration and low-self-esteem, so do children. Mr. Jeon, Taekwondo master and founder of Jeon’s Traditional Taekwondo program, would like to talk about how Taekwondo could help children to manage their mental wellbeing and emotions.

According to many health experts, Taekwondo is not just limited working on physical health, but also their emotional health by reducing stress, frustration & anger, and improves self-esteem and increased metacognition.

1.  Decreased daily life stresses

According to researchers, deep breathing helps to reduce stress levels.

In Taekwondo, Mr. Jeon teaches the way of breathing when students are performing poomsae. Poomsae is a form of Taekwondo that includes punches, kicks, stances and steps. One poomsae has 19 to 25 movements that depends on the level. There are moments of inhaling and holding and exhaling between each movement. These patterns encourage students to do deep breathing. While they are doing this, plenty of oxygen comes through to their blood veins and brain, which can make their bodies and minds relaxing.

2.  Better ways of dealing with frustration and anger

Think about the situations when you have gotten frustrated or angry. Most of the situations would be from failures or disappointments. When you get mad or frustrated, you cannot think as properly and make serious mistake. As mentioned above, Taekwondo lessons include breathing exercises which help with relaxing one’s thoughts. This helps children to learn how to deal with their inner self and let go of anger and frustration without a reaction.

3.  Improvement in self-esteem

Learning a new technique can be challenging to anyone. In Taekwondo class, students learn new skills that are most likely difficult for them as beginners. This can disappoint children internally more than we think. But by our instructor encouraging them to try one more time and practice more and more, they are likely to do it. As they experience small successes repeatedly, students know what they are capable of by taking on new challenges and increase their self-esteem.

4.  Increased metacognition.

Many cognitive psychologists have pointed out that “Metacognition is the cognition that monitors our abilities and knowledge within us and the level of knowledge we know”. Furthermore, if the knowledge stored in different realms is connected and retrieved, human abilities will be much improved. This is how to use metacognition.

Mr. Jeon teaches many different kicks and punches, steps and stances. After his lessons, he always asks questions about the skills students just learnt in the class. As students answer his questions, they go over those skills in their head and explain it in their speech. These processes help children to develop their metacognition. If they could not explain it, they realized which part of the technique they did not understand. The reason this is important is because in classes like sparring class, they have to use all the techniques that have learnt. In sparring, they have to figured out what skills can be used in what situations; middle punch can be used in the short distance attack and in the long distance, the skip roundhouse kick can be useful. These are the four of positive effects of Taekwondo on children’s mental wellbeing.
